• Ngāpuhi chief Hongi Hika's campaign against Ngāti Whātua ends with the battle Te Ika a Ranganui on the Kaiwaka River (approximately 105 km north of modern downtown Auckland). Hongi's eldest son is killed in the battle. Most of the Ngāti Whatua survivors, heavily defeated, flee south, leaving Tāmaki-makau-rau (Auckland) almost deserted until the arrival of Governor William Hobson in 1840. WebOct 29, 2024 · After a major defeat by Ngā Puhi at Te Ika-a-ranga-nui in 1825 Te Kawau and his people left their lands on the Tāmaki isthmus (the future site of Auckland) for several years. Te Kawau signed the Treaty of Waitangi at Manukau Harbour in March 1840. One reason was that he wanted British protection against future Ngāpuhi raids. WebTe Morenga was one of 13 rangatira to sign the 1831 letter to King William IV, and is said to have joined Tītore ’s taua to Tauranga in 1833. According to some accounts, his health was failing at this time and he died in 1834, which suggests it may have been his son, Kihiringi Te Morenga, who signed He Whakaputanga in his name on 12 July 1837.
